Symbaroum is an acclaimed Swedish roleplaying game by Free League PublishingThis starter set for the Symbaroum roleplaying game is designed to let you and your friends experience treasure hunts and expeditions in the dark and mysterious forest of Davokar, including two ready-made adventure sites for you to explore. It also contains guidelines for creating your own treasure hunt adventures. Of course, our hope is that your initial excursions into Davokar will leave you curious to know more about the game world - its forests, cultures and its long, dark history.Game MechanicsThe basic die roll in Symbaroum is a d20. Rolls are always made by the player (Never the GM). When a player attempts a task, they roll to succeed. When an NPC attempts an action against the player, the payer rolls to oppose or defend against the task. When a player hits in combat, they roll damage. When a player is hit in combat, they roll for armour to reduce the damage (Armour types have different sizes of dice and are able to prevent more damage or less damage accordingly-d4, d6, 2d4 etc).Attributes generally range from 5 to 15, with higher being better. When attempting a task the player is trying to roll equal to or below their attribute. Tasks with a static difficulty may modify the target number (up to +/-5 for tasks that are very easy or very difficult). Opposed task target numbers are modified by the opponent’s applicable attribute modifier.Modifiers for Attributes are +5 at Attribute score 15  +0 at Attribute Score 10 and -5 at Attribute score 5 (With a scale in between that follows that pattern)These are essentially reversed when opposing a roll. So if your character has an Attribute of 15 and is opposing a PC or NPC your +5 modifier would become a +5 to their roll (or essentially a -5 to their target number) Symbaroum does not use skills as such and any task is listed as being one Attribute opposed by another (for example to sneak it might be Discreet opposed by Vigilant, so your Discreet stat modified by the person you are sneaking past's Vigilance modifier)The eight Attributes are Accurate, Cunning, Discreet, Persuasive, Quick, Resolute, Strong, and Vigilant. Accurate and Quick are often opposed as offensive/defensive stats. Persuasive is often opposed by Resolute. Discreet is often opposed by Vigilant. Cunning and Strength (which also includes toughness/constitution concepts) most often roll against static difficulties.Basic CombatIn each round of combat, characters get two actions - one combat action and one movement action. Initiative is determined by who has the higher Quick. In general, attacks and spells are combat actions, while most other things are movement actions.Attacks are typically based on Accurate with the defence being based on Quick. So when player characters attack they typically roll Accurate modified by the opponent’s Quick, and when defending the players roll Quick as modified by the opponent’s Accurate. Useful resource site for all of this information can be found HERE
